Kitchen Soffit (bulkheads)

What’s a Soffit? A kitchen soffit is usually a boxy structure built to hide wiring, pipes, or other mechanicals, or to fill the space between the top of your cabinets and the ceiling. Depending on the age of your home they may be very large and perhaps even extend out past the cabinets.

The question remains… What does one do with them? When redoing a kitchen the best option is to remove the soffit but that is not always possible. The second best way to deal with it is to slap on some crown moulding and make it look like part of the cabinetry. As shown below:  

You could cut out little display areas but I think it looks a bit junky. As shown below:

Another neat idea is to make it be part of a tray ceiling. As shown below:
